One of the more popular appetizers that we are seeing nowadays in both “normal” and “abnormal” restaurants is cauliflower wings. Really anything cauliflower seems to be all the rage. We have tried to make buffalo cauliflower wings, plain, roasted you name it and we have tried to make it. The best recipe we have come across though has to be these sesame cauliflower bites. They are simple to make and taste like the are restaurant good. Normally that would make me suspicious that there was stuff in there that wasn’t good for you, like black magic or a tonne of oil, but no, these are pretty straight up good and good(ish) for you. So if you’re into watching sports this would be a great game time snack, or as an appetizer before dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cauliflower cut into florets

  • 1/3 cup of soy sauce, low sodium is best

  • 1/8 to 1/4 cup of maple syrup, depending on your tastes. We find 1/4 cup is too sweet.

  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar

  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced

  • 1 1/2 tsp of sesame oil

  • 1 tsp of ginger, minced

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp of corn starch

  • 1/4 cup of water

  • Sesame seeds for garnish

  • 3 green onions for garnish

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 450 F
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper
  • Spread the cauliflower florets in a single layer on baking sheet and bake on the middle rack for 10 minutes.
  • In a small pot over medium heat mix together the soy sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, garlic, sesame oil and ginger and bring to a slow boil.
  • In a separate bowl mix together the water and cornstarch. Stir until the cornstarch has completely dissolved.
  • Slowly add the cornstarch mixture into the sauce pot and bring back to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for two minutes and then remove from the heat.
  • After the cauliflower has baked for 10 minutes, flip the cauliflower and bake for another 10 minutes.
  • Finally, broil the cauliflower on the top rack for two minutes.
  • Put the cauliflower into a large bowl, pour the sauce and sesame seeds over the cauliflower and completely coat, garnish with green onions and serve.

Notes

  • If you like spicy foods, you can add in a little cayenne or red pepper flakes for some heat.
