Crispy convection basket onion bhajis are similar to pakoras but made with onions rather than a variety of different vegetables. Crispy convection basket onion bhajis make a great starter. Bhajis go well as a side dish with Indian meals. They make a great snack. Crispy convection basket onion bhajis are gluten free. For this version you will need an air fryer or a convection oven and an air fry basket. The nice thing about the air fry basket is that you end up using a lot less oil than if you were deep frying. Since we first posted this recipe we have tried a couple of different ways to cook these bhajis without deep frying. For method number two look at step 8 in the instructions below.

minutesOnion bhajis are a great addition to any Indian meal or as a snack. These are easy to make at home and use ingredients that you probably already have. Enjoy crispy, flavourful onion fritters any time.
Ingredients
2 small to medium red or other sweet onions finely sliced into rounds
100g or 1/2 cup gram (chickpea) flour
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp chili powder
½ tsp turmeric
1 garlic clove crushed
1/4 cup fresh coriander or parsley
1 green chili, deseeded and very finely chopped or 1/2 tsp of red pepper flakes
Salt to taste
4 Tbsp cold water
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 425 F on the convection roast setting.
- Slice the onions in fine rounds, separate the rings and soak in cold water.
- In a large bowl add the flour, baking powder, chili powder, turmeric, chopped chili, garlic, coriander and a good sprinkling of salt and mix thoroughly.
- Mix in the cold water and the oil to make a thick batter – add a splash more if it feels too stiff.
- Remove the onions from their soaking water (discard the water) and mix them into the batter.
- Using a spoon add small mounds of the bhaji mixture into your convection basket. You can fit about 10 or 12 into the convection basket.
- Roast for about 12 to 15 minutes or until crispy.
- If you don’t have a convections basket try this. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Pour 2 Tbsp of oil on the paper and spread evenly over the sheet. Put the bhajis on the sheet and bake for 12 minutes. Flip the bhajis and bake for another 15 minutes or until they are nice and crisp.
- Serve hot.
Notes
- Serve hot (or cold) with a yogurt mint dip with a meal, as a snack or on the go. They are a great thing to take camping, hiking or on a picnic. We love to take bhajis or pakoras on the boat for a quick heat and serve side.
