In the 24 years since our last beef burger we have tried countless alternatives. We have tried many store bought burgers and some of them are good. The issue of course is that some of those contain just as much fat and way more salt than the original. We have made burgers from just about every legume you can name but recently have been trying to perfect the black bean burger. Many recipes turn out to be quite dry and frankly not that flavourful. After playing around a bit we hit on this recipe which might just be the best black bean burger I have had.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of cooked (or canned) black beans

  • 1 red onion, very finely chopped

  • 5 large white mushrooms, very finely chopped

  • 1/2 a sweet red bell pepper, very finely chopped

  • 2 Tbsp tamari or soy sauce

  • 1 tsp of chili powder

  • 1 tsp of cumin

  • 2 tsp montreal steak seasoning (yes we see the irony)

  • 1/2 a cup of rolled oats

  • 1/2 cup of water

Directions

  • Add the onion, mushrooms and pepper to a large frying pan and saute until the moisture evaporates entirely.
  • Turn down the stove to a lower temperature and add the black beans and tamari. Stir well
  • Add the chili powder, cumin and steak seasoning and stir well.
  • Add the oats and water and continue to cook until the oats become soft. About 5 minutes.
  • Mash the mixture with the back of a large spoon or spatula.
  • Place the mixture in a bowl and refrigerate for 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 425° F
  • Form the mixture into 10 patties and place them on a prepared baking sheet. We use a 1/2 cup measuring cup to form the patties and this works well. Wet the cup from time to time to keep the burgers from sticking.
  • Bake for 25 minutes.
  • Serve with all your favourite burger fixings like pickles, tomato etc.
